AquaLabs Carbon Aid supplies plants with a bioavailable source of organic carbon, an essential component of photosynthesis normally obtained from CO2. Carbon Aid also contains and promotes the ferrous state of iron, allowing plants to absorb and utilise it more easily.
Consider this formulation if you are running a planted aquarium without CO2 injection, where carbon is almost always the nutrient in shortest supply. In an aquarium already running pressurised CO2, Carbon Aid is used as an additional supplement, contributing ferrous iron that supports colour and healthy new growth.
Dosage
Dose 3ml per 30 litres every 48 hours. Dose while the aquarium lights are on and ensure adequate surface agitation. Recommended with a minimum 30% weekly water change.

FAQ
Can I use Carbon Aid instead of CO2 injection?
Pressurised CO2 will always deliver better plant growth than any liquid carbon product, and if you are able to run it, that is the right choice.
Carbon Aid is for aquariums that are not running CO2. Plants in a non injected tank are almost always carbon limited, so supplying a usable carbon source lifts growth rate, colour and density noticeably over dosing nothing at all.
I already inject CO2. Is there any point using it?
In an injected aquarium your carbon is already covered, so Carbon Aid is used as an additional supplement rather than as a carbon source.
The value there is the iron. Carbon Aid supplies iron in the ferrous state, which is the form plants take up most readily, and it holds it in that state rather than letting it oxidise into something plants struggle to use. That shows most clearly in red plants and in new growth.
Does it replace my fertiliser?
No. Carbon Aid supplies carbon and iron only. It carries no nitrate, phosphate, potassium or full trace range, so it works alongside a complete fertiliser rather than instead of one.
Why does surface agitation matter?
Carbon Aid supplies an organic carbon source, and bacteria in your aquarium use that carbon too. As they multiply, their respiration consumes dissolved oxygen. At the recommended dose this is comfortably within what a normally aerated tank replaces at the surface.
Significant overdoses are a different matter. Oxygen can be consumed faster than the surface replaces it, and fish will gather at the top of the tank gasping. If you see that, increase aeration immediately and carry out a large water change.
Keeping your filter outlet breaking the surface, or running an airstone in a heavily stocked tank, prevents the situation entirely.
Is it safe for shrimp and snails?
Yes, at the recommended dose. Measure rather than estimate, and never double up to make good a missed dose.
